For if God didn’t spare the angels who sinned but threw them down into Tartarus and delivered them to be kept in chains until judgment.
2 Peter 2:4 HCSB
Then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials and to keep the unrighteous under punishment until the day of judgment.
2 Peter 2:9 HCSB
Before we go any further, some of you may be asking where or what is Tartarus? My Bible defines it as a Greek word which is a name for a place of divine punishment in the underworld.
I spent many years of my life thinking I was special. I thought God would spare me from judgment even though I was intentionally sinning. Hebrews 10:26 clearly tells us if we deliberately sin, there no longer remains a sacrifice for our sins but a terrifying expectation of judgment and the fury of a fire about to consume the adversaries.
There are people God spared in the Bible; Noah is a prime example. Noah walked with God (Genesis 6:9). He was described as righteous and blameless among his contemporaries. When God executed judgment on the entire world, He spared Noah and his wife and sons and daughters-in-law. He spared Noah because of Noah’s righteousness or his right standing with God. Noah walked with God; they shared a close relationship.
When we share a close relationship with our Lord and Savior, we don’t want to sin. We certainly want to rid ourselves of intentional sin. So, if God didn’t spare the angels who fell into sin, what makes you think He would spare you?
I think a big part of the problem is we fall for the devil’s lies. The devil tells us that God is so good and loving, which is true. But then he tells us because God is so good and loving, God will not judge us for our sins. This is not true. This is a big fat lie straight from the pits of hell.
Our Scripture passage tells us clearly that if God didn’t spare the angels who had fallen, why would he spare us? Does He love us? Yes, He does. He created the angels to live with Him in heaven, you think He loved them? Yes, I am sure He did. But we must never forget that God cannot and will not tolerate sin.
We know God loved His own Son, yet we are told in Romans 8:32 that He didn’t even spare His own Son but offered Him up for us all. God did this as a way to provide salvation for us for our sins. He provides the way, but we must accept it. We must make a conscious choice to walk with Him, to trust in Him, and to obey Him.
My friend, if the devil is telling you God will spare you from judgment or that God will overlook your sin, don’t believe him. The devil is lying to you.
In Vacation Bible School one of the children asked why God would put that tree in the garden that they couldn’t eat from in the first place. That is an excellent question. God put the tree there to give man free will. We have the freedom to choose to obey or not to obey Him. We can choose to love Him with all our heart or not love Him at all. We can accept Him as our Savior or reject Him, the choice is ours.
God didn’t spare the angels. He didn’t even spare His own Son. He loved us so much He sent His Son to die on that cross so that we could have eternal life. He loves us too, but He won’t spare us from judgment. We will be judged for all we say and all we do. The only way to be saved is through Jesus Christ.
Turn to Him today and trust in Him. Let go of your sin and grab hold of His righteous right hand and He will save you. This is the only way you will be spared from an eternity in hell.
Have a great day!
