I will lift up my eyes to the mountains; from where shall my help come? My helps comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. He will not allow your foot to slip; He who keeps you will not slumber. Psalm 121:2-3 NASB
Who do you call when you need help? Hopefully, we all have that close friend that we can call on in times of trouble. The one that will drop what they are doing and come to our aid when we are in desperate need of help.
If you are being attacked, you are better off to yell, “Fire!”, because people will run to see a fire. If you yell “Help!”, people are less likely to want to get involved. People are intrigued by fire, but may be scared off by a gun wielding attacker. I like to watch true crime documentaries and often times people will hear someone scream but will do nothing or will call 911. Often times by the time the police get there it is too late. I sit there thinking that if that person had just intervened they might have been able to stop the attack, but the average person has a fear of doing something like that. And of course we have all been in the desperate situations where a human cannot give us the kind of help that we need.
My husband is a big man and a good police officer. He thinks on his feet tactically and is an excellent shot. We met when I was working in law enforcement as a parole officer. So, let me say that I am not afraid to do most things. There are some things in which I exercise more caution, but I feel confident that I can still handle myself. Now my husband has a fear of me doing some things like going to an ATM at night and things of that nature. I will say, however, that when I am alone and doing these things I am more vigilant about my safety. When my husband is with me, I trust Him to be my body guard and I am more relaxed. But as I said, my husband is a police officer so half of the time, he is not around. He is out there protecting others and not available for me. I don’t mean that he would run to my aid if needed, I just mean that physically he is not right there by my side. Any human being can’t be with their loved ones 24/7 right?
The Bible tells us in Deuteronomy 31:6 that we are never alone. We should not fear for God goes with us. Your desperate plea for help at 3am will not awaken Him, we are told in today’s scripture passage that He does not sleep. He will not allow your foot to slip. God’s got you. He’s never more than a prayer or a desperate plea away. But, just as I had to accept my husband’s proposal for marriage, I have to accept God’s help. I have to believe in Him. I have to trust in Him.
This morning, after I had read my daily devotion, I sat here thinking about the song, Great Is Thy Faithfulness. God is so faithful. He never fails us. He is always there for us. I was thinking about all the times that God has come through for me, all the times that He has responded to my desperate cries for help. There have been times in my life where I actually felt that I had a guardian angel that helped me in a time of need. Psalm 91:11-12 tells us that He has given His angels charge to guard us in all our ways and that they will hold us up in their hands so that we do not strike our foot on a stone. Why would anyone deny that kind of help? Oh, I know, because they don’t want to give up their sinful ways. I know because once upon a time, that was me.
I found myself in more desperate situations including relationships, work, and finances all because I just would not give it over to God. But, boy when I did, what a relief. My help comes from the Lord. The same Lord that made the heavens and the earth is never too busy to help me out. When I align my will with His, He is faithful to help me in my time of need. Where does your help come from? Well, my friend why don’t you try trusting in God. He won’t let you down. No one can help us like He can. Oh, and just one more little piece of advice, I have learned to pray continually (1 Thessalonians 5:17). I have learned to pray about all situations that I face before I rush in. This often times saves me from having to call for help after I have charged in and messed everything up.
My prayer for you today is that you know where your help comes from. Your sin can’t save you, it can only sink you, so why not give it all over to God and ask Him to help you today?
Have a great day!
