Who Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree, so that having died to sin, we might live to righteousness; by His WOUNDS YOU WERE HEALED. For you were continually straying like sheep but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.
1 Peter 2:24-25 LSB
We all suffer from a sickness called sin. It began in the beginning of creation when Adam and Eve believed the devil’s lies in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3). The devil has continued to lie. We have continued to believe his lies. Romans 3:23 says we have all sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
The only cure for this sickness is Jesus Christ. He paid the price or the ransom so that we might be redeemed from our lives of sin. He who knew no sin took on the sins of the world, so that we might be saved. We don’t have to clean up to come to Him. We are told in 1 John 1:9 that if we confess our sins, He is faithful to forgive us and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
We mess up and He pays the price. It’s not really fair is it. We dirty ourselves with sin and His blood is the only thing that can wash us clean. Because we are unable to resist sinning, He had to be falsely accused, tortured, humiliated and crucified and rise from the dead to pay the price for our sins. He had to be wounded so that we could be healed.
He didn’t say IF we get our act together, He will save us. Romans 5:8 says that God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. He died for us in the hopes that we would accept Him as our Lord and Savior and accept the precious gift He offers, the gift of salvation.
My question for you today is have you been healed by His wounds? Jesus dying at Calvary defeated the devil. He conquered sin and death. The only way for us to conquer sin and death is to die to our old sinful selves and accept the free gift of salvation offered to us by Jesus Christ. In order to accept this gift, we must surrender our lives to Him.
It really doesn’t seem like much when you think of all He went through at Calvary for us, does it? But I get it. I spent years of my life thinking being a little better than I had been, was good enough. I didn’t want to completely surrender my life to Him because that meant giving up intentional sin. I had some sins in my life that I just didn’t want to give up. I thought God would understand. Boy, was I wrong.
If you are sick in sin, you may not even realize it yet. You may think you are doing just fine. But you need to understand that the sickness caused by sin is a terminal disease. Only death and destruction can come from it. But praise God, He offers a cure in His Son Jesus Christ. Will you accept the cure? Are you willing to die to your old self so that you can be a new creature in Christ. If you are, then the Bible tells us we will never have to experience the second death which is being thrown into the lake of fire (Revelation 20:14).
I know it’s a strange concept, being healed by His wounds and washed clean by His blood, but it’s the only way to God the Father (John 14:6). Are you willing to surrender your life to Him today? Are you willing to trust in Him and obey His commands? I hope so, because this is the only way you can be healed from the sickness of sin.
Have a great day!
