Got a secret?

This will take place on the day when God judges people’s secrets through Jesus Christ, as my gospel declares.  Romans 2:16 NIV

Secrets are funny things aren’t they?  If you have a secret about yourself you don’t want anyone to know, you guard it with your life, right?  You may tell a trusted friend or family member just to get it off your chest or perhaps ask for prayer, but you want them to guard that secret with their life.  Hopefully, you do the same if a close friend or family member shares a secret with you.

If someone tells you a secret about someone you don’t like, well that’s a different story.  When you’ve “got the goods on someone” that has wronged you, you feel a little powerful don’t you? I mean you know something about them that they don’t want anyone else to know.  This feeling of power can lead to things like blackmail and extortion, be careful with these types of secrets.

You have heard it said that “politics make strange bedfellows”.  This means that political interests can bring together people who otherwise have little in common.  This saying comes from the play The Tempest by William Shakespeare.  The line in the play was “Misery acquaints a man with strange bedfellows.”  This is spoken by a man who finds himself shipwrecked and seeking shelter beside a sleeping monster.  It sounds a great deal like the political situation today. You see this is often what causes trouble for our politicians.  They do things that they hope that no one ever finds out.  They have big secrets.   Now the interesting thing here is that most politicians are attorneys and if you have spent much time around attorneys then you know that they can appear to be the fiercest of enemies in the courtroom and leave there and go out for dinner afterwards. Strange bedfellows indeed.

The problem that many of our politicians find themselves in today is that they trusted each other with secrets.  They did things they are hoping no one ever finds out about and they enlisted the help of those who now know all their dirty little secrets. They trusted like-minded, selfish, narcissistic people with their secrets.  They trusted people who, like themselves, are only looking out for number one.  Now the bigger problem is that when an agency like the FBI comes prowling around everyone likes to tell everyone else’s secrets in hopes they can get themselves out of trouble.  If you have watched any investigative reporting shows, you have seen that in action.

Many have committed what would have been the perfect murder, except they let someone else in on their secret.  Perhaps they enlisted the help of someone or just couldn’t go without bragging or confessing what they did.

So, with all this being said, let’s get to the heart of the matter.  The heart of the matter is we can’t keep secrets from God.  I don’t care how good you are at keeping secrets, God knows.  I don’t care how sneaky you have been and how sure you may be that you won’t get caught, God has already caught you. Oh and no matter how wickedly smart you may think you are God is smarter.  He knows it all, even your deepest, darkest secrets.

The Bible tells us in Romans 2:3 that what we have said in the dark will be heard in the light and what we have whispered in the ears in the inner rooms will be shouted from the rooftops.  There are no secrets with God.  He knows what you are thinking.  He knows what you do, and what you say.

Now when we think about how God already knows all our dirty little secrets, then we may feel hopeless. The devil wants us to think that it is too late and that dream we had about eternity in heaven, forget about it.  There is no way we will get in if God knows all our secrets, right?  Wrong, there is a way to get in.  It’s not too late.  First confess your sins to God.  He knows them anyway, but he wants to hear you admit them to Him.  Believe that his Son Jesus Christ was sent to save you from these sins.  Repent of your sins, come to God and ask for His forgiveness.  The Bible tells us if we are willing to forgive others who have sinned against us, God is willing to forgive our sins against Him.  This is often the hardest part for me.  It’s not easy to forgive those who have done us wrong.  But let me tell you, I have things I want God to forgive me for and forget all about, so that makes it a lot easier for me to forgive others.

There are things in our relationship with Christ that I just don’t understand.  I am so grateful for the Bible which serves as our instruction manual.  I don’t understand why we need to pray, I mean God knows our needs and the desires of our heart, right?  But yet the Bible tells us we must pray.  I don’t understand why we must confess our sins God knows everything we think and do.  We have no secrets from God.

You’ve heard it said confession is good for the soul.  Maybe God wants us to confess in order for us to just admit there is a problem.  This is the first step.  Admit you have a problem, accept that Christ is your Lord and Savior, believe that he can save you from your sin.  Last but not least, confess your sin to Him, he is faithful to forgive you.  Then commit your life to Him.  You will be so glad you did!

Have a great day!
