And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work. 2 Corinthians 9:8 ESV
And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19 ESV
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. Psalm 23:1 ESV
The young lions suffer want and hunger, but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing. Psalm 34:10 ESV
Have you ever set out to do a job and not had the proper tools? Whatever we are attempting to do, we know that the job is going to be much easier when we have the proper equipment. I am grateful for zero turn mowers that have cut the time it takes to mow my grass in half. If I set out to prepare a meal, I want to have the right kitchen utensils to get the job done. If I need to get from point A to point B, I want to know that my vehicle will get me there.
When God calls us to do a task, He provides all that we need. In the story of David and Goliath (1 Samuel 17), David went to face this giant that had the Israelite army trembling. This giant, Goliath, was 9 feet 9 inches tall and was wearing a bronze helmet, bronze scale armor that weighed 125 pounds, bronze armor on his shins and had a bronze sword slung between his shoulders. His spear weighed 15 pounds. In addition to all this, he had a shield-bearer walking in front of him.
David had no armor, no sword, and no shield. Saul tried to put his armor on young David, but he was unable to walk in it. He removed the armor and took his staff and chose five smooth stones. With slingshot in hand, he approached the giant, Goliath.
Think about this for a minute, this giant standing over 9 feet tall fitted in all this fancy armor and carrying a spear is taken down by a young shepherd boy who is wearing no armor and is carrying with him only a staff, a slingshot and five stones. Imagine being there watching this. The Israelite army felt that it had come up against impossible odds. All these soldiers are there and this giant challenges them to send just one man to fight him. We are told in verse 11 that when Saul and all Israel heard this, they lost their courage and were terrified. But God, sent one scrawny teenage shepherd boy, equipped with a slingshot and five stones. Goliath was indignant that they had sent this teenager out with only a sling to fight him. He cursed David. But David stood his ground and replied to Goliath, “You come against me with a dagger, spear and a sword, but I come against you in the name of Yahweh of Hosts, the God of Israel’s armies-you have defied Him. Today, the LORD will hand you over to me. Today, I’ll strike you down, cut your head off, and give the corpses of the Philistine camp to the birds of the sky and the creatures of the earth. Then all the world will know that Israel has a God, and this whole assembly will know that it is not by sword or spear that the LORD saves, for the battle is the LORD’s. He will hand you over to us.”
If you feel as though you are facing a giant with no armor strong enough to protect and no weapons strong enough to do the job, know that God will provide. Know that God is there with you and nothing is impossible for God. If you are stepping out to fight in God’s will and for His cause, He’s got you. If God has called you to do something, know that He will provide all you need to do it. Trust in Him.
The story of David and Goliath is one of my many favorites in the Bible. I read it and I imagine myself on this battle field with the mighty Israelite army terrified by this giant and then along comes little David the shepherd boy. David knew that God was with Him and He knew that God would fight this battle, he just had to show up and do as God instructed.
My friend if you are trying to do a job and you feel as though you are not strong enough or smart enough or don’t have the right equipment, know that God will provide. God never calls us to do something that He does not equip us to do. We just have to be willing to step out and do it.
Have a great day!
