You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart. Jeremiah 29:13 HCSB
You hear people say that they do certain things to find themselves. They leave their spouse and their children to find themselves. Now days it may be called self-discovery. Saying that you need to find yourself would indicate that you are lost, right? I am just trying to keep up here. The only thing I have discovered about myself is that when I step away from Jesus, I don’t like who I become. I have been there, done that, got the t-shirt and plan to never go back there again.
When Jesus was asked what was the greatest of the commandments, He responded, “To love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind (Matthew 22:37). That is His greatest commandment. This means that this is what we need to be busy doing while we are passing through here on planet earth. I can’t find any scripture in the Bible that tells us we need to focus on our inner selves or find out who we are. We are supposed to be in Christ. That is where we are supposed to be as we wait to go to heaven.
We are doing a Bible study on spiritual warfare at our church and I am so thankful for my sister in Christ who has taken the time to put this study together. It is so relevant to what is going on in our world today. Satan is very deceptive and we must be very careful. His minions or false prophets are all over the place and we must be able to discern truth from fiction in these last days.
I can tell you that anyone telling you that you need to find yourself or enter into a path of self discovery is using a distraction technique. Sadly, they are doing the devil’s bidding and may not even be aware of it. In law enforcement distraction techniques are very useful. Distracting a person can allow whoever is doing the distracting to take control. Think about that. A distraction technique is a very handy tool and one that the devil uses often. I have noticed lately that he is using the distraction technique of trying to get us more focused on ourselves. Don’t fall for that. Our focus needs to be on Jesus and Jesus alone. Matthew 6:33 tells us to seek ye first the kingdom of God and all these things will be added unto you. We must stay focused on Him.
Jesus added that the second greatest commandment was to love others as we love ourselves. He added that “as we love ourselves” part because He knows that most of us love ourselves a lot. We just have to be careful that we don’t love ourselves so much that we fail to put Him and others before ourselves. We put Him first, others second and yes, we come last.
Horoscopes, personality tests and any other tools that have us looking anywhere other than Jesus are simply distraction techniques. Be careful that you are not deceived by this. It’s not all about you, precious. It’s all about Jesus. It’s about Him and how we treat others.
Everything that we need to know about ourselves can be found in God’s Holy Word. We are sinners. Romans 3:23 tells us that we all sin and fall short of the glory of God. John 3:16 tells us that we are dearly loved by God. We must make a choice, in Galatians 5:16, Paul tells us that if we walk in the Spirit, we will not gratify the lusts of the flesh. God’s Holy Word tells us how we should live and how we should love Him and others. If you are focused on God, your personality will be that of a Christian, meaning that you will exhibit the fruits of the Spirit given in Galatians 5:22-23 which are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, and self-control. My friend if you live your life staying filled with God’s Holy Spirit, this is what will spill out. This is what others will see in you. This will be your personality.
Many mainstream evangelists are going the way of prosperity preaching or talking about these personality tests and pathways to find yourself. Sadly, these are just distraction techniques. The devil wants nothing more than for you to become focused on yourself in these end times.
My friend, there is only one Way and that is Jesus Christ. In these last days, you better be all about finding Him. Our scripture passage for today tells us that if we seek Him with our whole heart, we will find Him. We must also understand that if we reject Him, He will reject us forever (2 Chronicles 6:38). If you are on some type of journey trying to find yourself, stop and just look up. Find Jesus before it is everlasting too late.
Have a great day!
