Emergency Contact

Know therefore that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations.   Deuteronomy 7:9 ESV

Often times when we fill out forms, they require that we list an emergency contact. When you go to a new doctor, start school, start employment, or start as a volunteer, they want to have an emergency contact on file. If something were to happen to you where you could not contact anyone, those working with you or attending school with you want to know who to call.

When you list an emergency contact, you want to be sure of two things. First you want to list someone that would know pertinent information about you like illnesses and allergies and things of that matter and secondly it is important that you list someone that is likely to answer their phone, because let’s face it a lot of people tend to ignore their phones. Some of us keep them on silent. Some of us don’t know where they are half the time and some keep them attached like an appendage. You want the person that keeps their phone attached as your emergency contact.

Now another really important thing about your emergency contact is that it should be someone that knows you well. For example, you would not want to list someone that you haven’t spoken to in several years, right? You don’t want them to answer that call and say, “Who are you talking about?”

Now when we contact someone or some agency in case of an emergency, we want a rapid response, right? We want to know that they are immediately attending to our situation. If we call the fire department, it is because something is on fire and we want them there ASAP. Our local fire department is awesome and let me say they have a rapid response rate. If we call for the police because someone is breaking into our home, we don’t want to be put on hold. We want to know that help is on the way.

In case of an emergency, we want help and we want it right away. Now I have learned that my most important emergency contact is God. I can turn to Him with the big things and the small things. I can trust Him. I know that He is faithful. Can he say the same for me? Our scripture passage today tells us that God is God and He is faithful and steadfast and keeps His promises to those who love Him and keep His commandments. So, I ask you today are you one of those people who love Him and keep His commandments?

I have learned that I need that blessed assurance. I need to know that I know, that I know, that God works all things out for my good. In order for me to know this, I too have to be faithful (Romans 8:28). I don’t need God to be my emergency contact, I need Him to be my constant companion. I need His presence in my life. In order for me to have that, I have to love Him wholeheartedly and do my very best to keep His commandments. I have to do my part.

Often times, we don’t realize that our relationship with God is a two way relationship. It should be a reciprocal relationship. Would you want to be in a one-sided relationship? God doesn’t want that either.

I want you to ask yourself something today. When the army coming against you is too big and you feel like you can’t face the battle, who is your emergency contact? Will you call a friend or a relative or will you cry out to God? And secondly, if you cry out to God will it be as a faithful companion? Or, will it be someone that He hasn’t from in a while, like maybe since your last emergency?

God is God, there is nothing too big for Him. But, we can separate ourselves from Him through our disobedience (Isaiah 59:2). Trust in God, enter into a loving relationship with Him. Keep His commandments. Don’t use Him as your emergency contact, be in constant contact with Him. We are told in 1 Thessalonians 5:17, to pray without ceasing. We should be in constant contact with our Lord and Savior. He should never be used only as our 911.

It’s not a matter of if you will need Him, but when you will need Him. Stay close to Him, love Him, honor Him, praise Him. Walk with Him so that when disaster strikes, He is right there beside you to walk you through the fire and the flood.

Have a great day!
