Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth! Psalm 46:10 NKJV
This is a very simple verse. It is easy to understand, not complicated at all. So, why is it so hard to do? Is it just me? I have a hard time keeping my grubby little paws off at times. I want to get in there and fix it. I want to handle things. But often times these are things that God needs to handle. I have found that when I get in there and try to handle it, I just make a mess of things.
A couple of years ago, I was going through a really hard time. It was new territory for me and I wasn’t sure how to proceed. The funny thing is that the devil kept putting some quick fix things in there that I’m pretty sure would have eliminated my problem. But every time I considered using one of these things that was right there in front of me, I heard a still, small voice, repeat today’s scripture, “Be still and know that I am God”. I had no peace about the decision of the quick fix. I had no peace about taking matters into my own hands. I knew that I had to be still. When I sat still and waited on God, I had peace.
Now there were delays along the way, but what I learned was that each and every delay happened for a reason. You see God was lining things up perfectly to work them out in a way that would benefit me the most. He was working things out for my good and His glory just like Romans 8:28-30 tells us He will do.
I noticed something else during this time, I noticed that each and every time I would get my hands in it that God would turn loose. But just as soon as I let go, God would begin working things out again.
Why is it so hard to let go and let God handle our problems? Well, most of us are fixers. We like to take control and we like to get the job done. We are also impatient. The issue that I dealt with dragged on for a year and a half. But we know that God’s timing is perfect. Ecclesiastes 8:6 says this, For there is a time and a way for everything, although man’s trouble lies heavy on him.
Let’s face it, our problems weigh heavily on us, they drag us down. We want them handled in our way and in our time, which is usually yesterday. But we must trust in God and His timing. We must be assured that he has good plans for us and wants good things for us (Jeremiah 29:11).
There were times during my ordeal that God instructed me to move and to do something, but I had drawn near to Him. I knew that I needed him desperately and that I must do as He instructed in order for this to all work out. So, I was able to discern when he was telling me to move and when he was telling me to be still. Trust in His plan and His timing. Know that He wants to work all things out for your good (Romans 8:28). Resist the urge to jump in and handle things yourself.
Be still, and trust in Him. Know that He is God and He’s got this. When we trust in Him, He will make our paths straight (Proverbs 3:5-6). It may be easier said than done, but with God’s help, all things are possible (Luke 1:37). So, take a load off, sit back and watch God perform wonders. You need only to trust in Him.
Have a great day!
