When Sanballat, Tobiah, Geshem the Arab, and the rest of our enemies heard that I had rebuilt the wall and that no gap was left in it-though at the time I had not installed the doors and the gates-Sanballat and Geshem sent me a message: “Come, let’s meet together in the villages of the Ono Valley.” But they were planning to harm me. So, I sent messengers to them saying, “I am doing a great work and cannot come down. Why should the work cease while I leave it and go down to you?” Nehemiah 6:4 HCSB
Let me start by saying if you are trying to rebuild a relationship with someone, I strongly recommend that the two of you read the book of Nehemiah. Nehemiah was greatly distressed at the fact that the wall around Jerusalem had been destroyed. He prayed and felt lead to rebuild the wall. There were several who opposed Nehemiah and mocked him. As his building was showing great success, they even intended to bring him harm to stop him from building the wall.
If you are doing a great work, don’t come down. Sometimes when we are trying to do our best is when the devil uses those around us to discourage us. The devil may try to tempt us into doing something that is wrong to stop the work we are doing. I love Nehemiah’s answer. He responds that he is doing a great work and then asks why should the work cease while he goes down to meet them? By the way, these guys are his enemies. So why should he stop what he is doing to meet with them? He knows that they only intend to do him harm.
The Bible tells us that all things work for the good of those who love the Lord and are called according to His purpose, or are doing the work He has called us to do. So, if you are doing what God has called you to do and you love Him, then you know that He will handle the rest. But you still must stay focused on the work that He has called you to do.
Life gets very hectic sometimes. Sometimes it’s as though there just aren’t enough hours in the day to get everything done. But one thing we should never fail to do is spend time with God. I have learned that if I make time for God at the beginning of my day, he makes things go smoother for me throughout the day. I have learned that if I neglect going to church on Sunday to “catch up” on work that it makes me fall farther behind. However, if I go to church God seems to make time in my schedule for me to get caught up.
If you are facing something that has been destroyed, perhaps its a relationship, perhaps its your reputation, perhaps its someone’s trust in you, it may take time and a lot of work, but you can rebuild it. The important thing is to not lose your focus. Don’t become distracted. Keep at it until it is completed.
These men first begin to mock Nehemiah in chapter 2, I love the reply Nehemiah gives them in verse 20. “The God of heaven is the One who will grant us success”!
When we set out to do an important work for God, all we have to do is the work. He will handle everything else. No matter what comes against us, as long as we stay focused on Him, He will handle the problems that pop up.
So remember that God has called each and every one of us to do an important work. The enemy is trying to entice us to stop the work and come down to them. We must tell them that we are doing an important work and cannot come down. We must let them know that the work cannot cease while we come down to meet with them.
If some relationship that you are in has been destroyed, know that God destroys relationships for one of two reasons. One reason is that we sometimes get ourselves into relationships that are not good for us and God has to destroy that relationship to release us from it. Another reason is that sometimes the relationship becomes infested with bad things and it needs to be levelled and rebuilt.
With God’s help, anything that is destroyed can be built up better and stronger. So if God is leading you to rebuild something, don’t let the enemy stop you. Remember that “the God of heaven is the one who will grant us success”. But above all don’t stop the work to go down and meet the enemy. Do not let your work cease.
Keep on keeping on and have a great day!
