So it was, that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.
Luke 2:6-7 NKJV
The Bible tells us of the shepherds that were told by an angel about Jesus birth and rushed to see Him (Luke 2:8-20). We know that the Wise Men came later because we are told in Matthew 2:11 that they went into the house to see Him. But as far as we know, the little town of Bethlehem was just bustling with the people that had come from the census and likely had no idea that our savior, the King of kings and the Lord of lords had been born in a stable and laid in a manger in their little town. The people of the town were just going on about their business, oblivious to what was happening in that stable. I’ve often wandered if this innkeeper had known anything about this child that Mary was about to give birth to, would he have done things differently? Would he have said, “Here take my room, I can sleep on the floor or in the stable.” Would he have made room for them?
Sadly, the scene has not changed much in the Christmases since then. Many people just bustle around in oblivion to what the season is truly about. It becomes more about getting the tree up and decorated and getting presents bought and wrapped. We fret over our schedules as we try to cram in too many parties and get togethers with friends and family. We get so caught up in the materialism and seem oblivious to that baby born in the stable and laid in a manger. We forget the importance of making room for Him in our lives and in our hearts.
I won’t take much of your time today, I simply want to ask you if you have made room for Him in your heart? Have you cleared out space from all that demands your attention so you can give Him your undivided attention? Are you focused on Him or on all the things left on your to-do list?
We must remember the tiny baby who lay in the manger is the same man who died on the cross to save miserable sinners like you and me. He lived His whole life for you and me. Can you spare some time for Him today? Can you make fellowshipping with Him a regular part of every day of your life? We shouldn’t just remember that baby or that man at Christmas and Easter, but every day of the year. We should not only make room, but we should give Him first place in our hearts and our lives.
No matter how busy you get this season, please understand that Jesus’ sole purpose in life was to save us from an eternity spent in hell. He came to give us a chance at salvation. Will you put Him first or will you just go on in oblivion?
The Wise Men took time to come to Jesus, I pray that you will do the same.
Have a great day!
