Bigger Fish to Fry

If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things of the earth. For you died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is our life appears, then you will also appear with Him in glory.    Colossians 3:1-4 NKJV

Our Scripture passage for today begins with one of the biggest 2 letter words in our vocabulary-If. If you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is sitting at the right hand of God.

Many people today claim to love the Lord, they claim to be saved, they claim to be Christians, but this is where we determine true salvation. If we are truly saved, we want what God wants. We want Gods will in our lives and the lives of others. And most importantly we want to do God’s work. We want to serve Him; we want to show love to others. We focus on the things that are above. We don’t let the things of this world distract us to the point that we fail to focus on Him. God is a priority in our lives.

When I lived on the water, I thought I was living my best life. My priority was spending time on the waterways with friends. I went to church when it didn’t interfere with my plans for the day. That never brought the satisfaction, I hoped it would. Looking back, I realize what I was pursuing never gave me the true peace and joy that I have found in Christ.

In order to be raised with Christ, we must die to ourselves. Galatians 2:20 says, “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.” Romans 6:11 says, “Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

There are so many distractions in this world, but there is nothing in our lives more important than Jesus Christ and spending our lives lived with Him. In Nehemiah, when Nehemiah was rebuilding the wall, there were those around him that were trying to stop him. They were trying to get him to come down and meet with them, but he would not be distracted from doing what God had called him to do. His response to them in Nehemiah 6:3 says, “So I sent messengers to them, saying, “I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down. Why should the work cease which I leave it and go down to you?” Simply put, Nehemiah had bigger fish to fry.

We must focus on what is good and what is eternal. We must not be distracted by the things of this world. We are told in 1 John 2:17, “And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.”

When we say we have bigger fish to fry, it implies we are not interested, or we have more important work to do. It implies we can’t be bothered with whatever is going on at the moment. I promise you have no bigger fish to fry than securing your eternity with Christ in heaven.

Focus on Him. Serve Him. Do what He calls you to do. Be absolutely, positively sure you are saved and will spend eternity with your Lord and Savior. And when the world sends its distractions, don’t be afraid to let them know you have bigger fish to fry.

Have a great day!
