And all who heard Him were astonished at His understanding and answers. So when they saw Him, they were amazed; and His mother said to Him, “Son, why have you done this to us? Look, Your father and I have sought you anxiously.”
And He said to them, “Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?” But they did not understand the statement which He spoke to them.    Luke 2:47-50 NKJV

We know that Jesus was a bit older maybe as much as two years old when the wisemen visited with Him. We know that He began His ministry at the age of 30. The only thing we know about the time in between this is when Jesus lingered behind in Jerusalem at the temple when His family began their return trip to Nazareth after celebrating the Feast of Passover which they did every year. They searched for Him for three days and found Him in the temple. Our Scripture passage is His response to them. We are told in Luke 2:52 that Jesus grew in wisdom and favor with God and men.

Jesus was 12 years old just a year shy of the age at which Jewish boys became a “son of the commandment” and a full member of the religious community. He listened and He asked questions. He also answered questions and astonished the teachers at the temple (Luke 2:46-47).

You can imagine how frantic Joseph and Mary were when they realized they had lost their son somewhere between Jerusalem and their day of travel. Jesus wasn’t lingering to be a rebellious teenager nor was he giving them a flippant answer when Mary asked why he treated them that way. Jesus wasn’t lingering behind to be disobedient or disrespectful, He was simply conducting His father’s business. Mary and Joseph didn’t understand His answer at the time.

I said all this to ask you this question-are you about your father’s business?
Joseph, Jesus’ earthly father was a carpenter and I’m sure Jesus learned a lot about carpentry growing up with Joseph.

But Jesus was talking about His heavenly Father and when I ask if you are about your father’s business, I am referring to God’s business.

We are told in Matthew 6:33 to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things will be added or given to us. What Jesus is saying here is if we focus on Him and do the work He has called us to do and be obedient to Him, He will see to it that our needs are met. In other words if we are about our Father’s business He will take good care of our business.
Doing what God has called me to do is easy because He has given me all I need to do it. He is with me every step of the way. Trying to run my life my way has been disastrous. This is why I prefer to go through this life obeying Him and doing what He has called me to do.
It is so much easier to trust in Him and have Him lead me. He clears the path before me and walks me through it.

If your business isn’t going so well stop and ask yourself who’s running it, you or Him? We were put here to be in close fellowship with Him. Romans 8:28 says “All things work for the good of those who love the Lord and are called according to His purpose.”

If you are focused on you and your business let me know how that works out for you. I found out the hard way that it’s best for me to focus on Him and what He has called me to do. When I do this, He takes way better care of my business than I ever could.
Why don’t you try it for yourself, don’t just take my word for it.
