I recall your sincere faith that first lived in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am convinced, is in you also. 2 Timothy 1:5 CSB
Our Scripture passage is from the second letter Paul wrote to Timothy. Timothy was a young man with a reputation for godliness. He was Paul’s disciple, and friend, and labored with Paul ministering with him in Berea, Athens, and Corinth. He also accompanied him on his trip to Jerusalem.
In this Scripture passage, Paul mentions Timothy’s grandmother, Lois, and his mother, Eunice. They named Timothy and his name means, “one who honors God.” These two women were devout Jews who became believers in the Lord Jesus Christ and taught Timothy the Old Testament Scriptures from his childhood.
They remind me of my mother and my paternal grandmother. These two women were devout Christians who led an exemplary life of Christian stewardship. They modeled Christian living to those around them by imitating Christ and showing faith, love, and kindness.
This will be the first Mother’s Day that I won’t have my mom here with me. She has gone on to join my grandmother Nancy and other loved ones in heaven.
My friend if you have a faithful mother, please don’t disregard her teachings. Please know that her teachings are worth more than silver and gold. Cherish each moment with her.
If you are not in church, there is no better way to honor her than to go to church with her. I went to a different church for years, but I would always go back to my home church to honor my mother for Mother’s Day.
Honor her in your daily living by not forgetting where you came from. Don’t forget her teachings. Let the love of Christ that she taught you from your youth show through. Let others have no doubt who your mother is and what she taught you as a child.
And if you became a Christian despite a lack of help from your mom, teach other young women and mentor them. Be the kind of woman found in Proverbs 31. Take heed to the teachings found in Titus 2:3-5 which say that older women are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not slaves to excessive drinking. They are to teach what is good, so that they may encourage the young women to love their husbands and to love their children, to be self-controlled, pure, workers at home, kind, and in submission to their husbands so that God’s word will not be slandered.
As women, we have a God-given responsibility to mentor other women and teach them how they should live to honor Christ.
Even if you have no children, you have those around you who need to see your faith. They need to see your example of godly living.
If you are a mother, model godly living for your children. Bring them up with the Scriptures. Teach them to study the Bible and make them understand that church should be a priority in their lives. There is nothing you can give them that is worth more than a good foundation in Jesus Christ.
Have a great Mother’s Day!
