A Matter of Life or Death

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.  John 3:16 ESV

According to an article by Eva Krockow, Ph.D. in Psychology Today, the average person makes about 35,000 choices a day. This is based on someone sleeping 7 hours a day. This leaves 17 waking hours, and in those waking hours we make an average of 2,058.82 decisions.

We may not consider most of these decisions to be a matter of life and death. When we say something is a matter of life and death, we are saying that it is extremely important. But if you really think about it, many decisions are extremely important.

Many of our decisions are a matter of life and death. Many determine how healthy we will be as we live here on planet earth. Determining what we will eat is extremely important to our health. Determining whether or not we will exercise is extremely important to our health. Deciding to not put unhealthy things in our body like alcohol, nicotine, and other drugs is an important decision. Also deciding not to put too much sugar or caffeine into our bodies is important.

In addition to those decisions, we must consider our eternal life. The decisions we make here on earth will affect where we spend eternity.

I must admit there are times when I just don’t feel like making a decision. But we must realize that then we have to decide not to decide. Isn’t that still a decision? Deciding to spend eternity in heaven is a very personal decision and no one can make that decision for you. You must do it for yourself.

So, I ask you today are you making good choices? Are you making good choices for your physical health? I know I have found myself lacking in that department lately and my body is letting me know this. We are reminded in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 that our body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in us and who we have from God, and we are not our own. We are also reminded that we were bought for a price and should therefore glorify God in our body and our spirit, which are God’s.

God gives us the body we have. It would be great if he would just program us like robots to make good physically healthy and spiritually healthy decisions, but he gives us choices. He lets us choose to be healthy or to be unhealthy. He lets us choose eternal life or eternal damnation.

As we go through each waking hour of each day, we must continually decide to do what is right or what is wrong? None of us know how much time we have left here on earth, so it’s extremely important that we make wise choices. It truly is a matter of life and death.

I have become a little laxed in making healthy choices both physically and spiritually. I have determined to try my best to do better. I pray that if you too have become laxed in good decision making, you will commit to doing better as well.

Won’t you join me on a journey of being physically and spiritually healthy?

Have a great day!
