A Little Too Late

Those that entered, male and female of all flesh, entered as God had commanded him; and the LORD closed it behind him.   Genesis 7:16 NASB

Have you ever been just a minute late for something important? Perhaps you were trying to get that bill payed and got distracted and was just a minute late getting it done which could have cost you a hefty late fee. Perhaps you were trying to get to a place of business and got there just as they locked the door and put the Closed sign up. If you search the term a little too late, it will bring you to the song by Toby Keith which was released in 2006. It speaks of a relationship that has gone south and is tells of how it’s a little too late to repair the relationship.

The funny thing about the term, a little too late, is that there is no such thing. Think about it, we are either on time or we are late. In the case of paying a bill or arriving at a business one minute late is no different than five hours late, late is late.

But, I’m not talking about being late to pay a bill or conduct business. I’m talking about the tragedy of being too late where God is concerned. Now if I need to pick up my clothes at the cleaners and I know they close at 5:00pm, I know that 5:05 will be too late, right?

Now sometimes we are late and it is unavoidable, there are traffic issues or we get caught up at work. Things happen, right? But when it comes to our relationship with our Lord and Savior, being late is not an option. There is no excuse. If you are waiting for any reason to get your life right with God, you may as well be playing Russian Roulette.

In Genesis 6, God was disgusted with mankind. He saw that man had become so corrupt. He found the one righteous person on earth which was Noah and commanded that He build an ark. God told Noah that He was going to flood the earth. He gave Noah very detailed instructions on how to build this ark and told Noah to gather his family and enter the ark and bring the animals into the ark. Noah did as God commanded and God shut the door. I’m sure that many people saw Noah building this huge ark and thought he was crazy.  A flood must have sounded insane to the people in a land where it they had never seen rain, only a mist. But by the time it began to rain, it was too late.

My 8 year old niece says, “I’m done with them!” when she gets angry with someone. Well, in this case, God was done with them. The last thing you want, my friend, is for God to be done with you. This world is so corrupt, there are many indications that the rapture will occur soon.  We just don’t know how bad it will get or how long He will allow all of this to continue. One thing that we do know is He is there for us. He is waiting for us to come to our senses. But, He won’t wait forever.

Romans 1:18-24 tells us that the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness. We are told that even though they knew God, they did not honor Him or give thanks but became futile in their speculations and their foolish hearts were darkened. We are told that professing to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of an incorruptible God in order to worship idols. But the saddest scripture is found in verse 24 where we are told God gave them over to the lusts of their hearts. They continued along in their unbelief until it was too late and they suffered horrific consequences.

None of us know how long we have left here on earth. But we do know we serve a God of justice (Isaiah 30:18). We serve a God of mercy (Ephesians 2:4). We serve a jealous God (Exodus 20:5). We serve a God whose wrath remains on those who do not obey Him (John 3:36).

There is no such thing as being a little too late when it comes to accepting God’s invitation to salvation. Draw near to Him, admit to Him that you are a sinner. Believe in Him and know He can cleanse you of your sin. If you don’t have a good, solid relationship with your Lord and Savior, I beg of you to establish that relationship before it’s too late. None of us know what day and what hour God will close that door. Trust in Him right now today, don’t be a little too late.

Have a great day!
