Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? 1 Corinthians 1:20 NASB
Have you ever met someone who was super smart? If you have watched the Big Bang Theory on television, then you know that the main characters are highly intelligent and don’t believe in God. They believe in evolution.
Some people take great pride in their own wisdom, but God considers worldly wisdom foolishness. It doesn’t matter how much you are educated or how smart you think you are. If you consider the message of the cross foolishness, you are not wise. In Isaiah 29:14, God tells that He will deal marvelously with these people and says the wisdom of their wise men will perish and the discernment of their discerning men will be concealed.
I’m not that bright, so I keep it simple. If God’s word says it, I believe it, no questions asked. But I have had conversations with people that are extremely smart and some of them have a hard time believing the Bible. I guess if you look at what we, as Christians believe, it may seem foolish to the non-believer.
We believe that God, whom we have never seen, exists in three persons. We believe in God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. I accept that God the Father is the one who gives me good things (James 1:17) and protects me (Psalm 91). I accept that He created the universe and everything in it in six days and rested on the seventh day (Genesis 1-2). I accept that God the Son is the one who died to save me and was risen from the dead. I also accept that He sits at the right hand of God, the Father, and intercedes on my behalf (Romans 8:34). I accept that God, the Holy Spirit, is the one who I need to fill my heart with each day (Ephesians 5:15-20). This is the one that keeps me from plotting evil against those who hurt me. This is what keeps me content in Christ because His spirit is with me. I believe in God, accept Jesus as my savior, and pray each day to be filled with the Holy Spirit.
We are also expected to believe that God, the Father, loved us so much that He sent his one and only Son to earth to die for our sins (John 3:16). We are expected to believe that His Son was born of a virgin (Isaiah 7:14). We are expected to believe that His Son was tempted, just as we are, but never sinned (Hebrews 4:15). We are expected to believe that His Son performed many miracles and even though He never sinned or broke any laws, was humiliated, severely beaten, and hung on a cross for our sins (Matthew 27:32-56). We are expected to believe that His Son died and rose from the dead on the third day (Luke 24:6-8). I know I have given you a lot to think about, but there is more.
We are then expected to believe that no matter what horrible thing we have done, through Jesus’ death we can be saved from our sins (Romans 5:9-10).
This is a lot of stuff to wrap your head around, I know. In the natural realm, it sounds impossible, right? Lee Strobel was a reporter from the Chicago Tribune who just couldn’t believe all this stuff could really happen. He did a very thorough investigation in his book, The Case for Christ, which has since been made into a documentary and a movie. If you have doubts, don’t take my word for it, take the word of a former non-believer.
All I can say is this, when it comes to God and His Word, I believe. I have seen miracles performed. I have felt His presence and have experienced His love and protection. I know that God exists. I know that my savior lives and I know that in Him, I am redeemed.
My hope for you today is that you believe. But, if you don’t believe, do some investigating, do some research, or at least review Lee Strobel’s findings.
If God gave you great wisdom, don’t use it up being foolish. Our pastor, Dan Munson, explained it in this way, “we who have a finite mind are trying to understand an infinite God”. 1 Corinthians 1:25 tells us, “For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.” So in all this, whatever may seem most foolish to us, we must know that God is so much wiser than we will ever be. We must also know that on His weakest day, He is infinitely stronger than we are. So for this reason, I trust in His strength and His wisdom. I pray for discernment to know His will and the wisdom to obey it, and He never lets me down. I pray that you will do the same.
Have a great day!
