Would You Sacrifice Your Child?

So, Lot went out to them through the doorway, shut the door behind him, and said, “Please, my brethren, do not do so wickedly! See now, I have two daughters who have not known a man; please, let me bring them out to you, and you may do to them as your wish; only do nothing to these men, since this is the reason they have come under the shadow of my roof.”     Genesis 19:6-8 NKJV

In our Scripture passage two men, who were actually angels sent to destroy Sodom, were in Lot’s house. The perverted men of the city wanted them sent out so they could have their way with them. Neither Lot nor these men had any idea they were dealing with angels.

Lot offers his two virgin daughters to these men in an effort to save the visitors. We see almost an exact repeat of this in Judges 19 when a Levite is traveling and spends the night in a man’s home. The men of Gibeah surround the home wanting to have sex with the Levite man. The homeowner offers his virgin daughter and the Levite’s concubine, but the men don’t relent. So, the Levite sends his concubine out to them where they savagely rape her throughout the night.

It’s easy for us to look at Lot and this man from Gibeah and think, “How on earth could you offer your daughter to these perverted men?” How could you sacrifice your daughter or son to people so evil. But as I was reading Warren Wiersbe’s commentary on Judges chapter 19 this morning, he made a very interesting point.

Isn’t this what we do when we expose our children to the vulgarity that abounds in movies, on television and even at rock concerts and comedy routines? Don’t we take away their innocence? Wiersbe goes on to point out that chastity of the body must begin with chastity of the heart and mind.

When we teach our sons and daughters that filling their minds with garbage won’t hurt them, we are leading them down a dangerous path. We are sacrificing them to the world and its fleshly ways.

When I look at my stepson and my granddaughter and my nephews with my great nieces and see the father/daughter bond that exists, I am moved almost to tears. That is such a tender bond. I enjoyed that bond with my father as well. My mother often spoke with great fondness and admiration for her father.

I can’t imagine any of these men just willingly handing their daughters over to a lust-filled perverted mob. It seems so cruel and heartless. In the case of Lot, he was trying to defend the men who were visiting in his home. These men were strangers to him, and he had no idea at the time that they were actually God’s angels sent to destroy this vile and wicked city.

In the case of the Levite, he sent his concubine out to be tortured in order to save his own skin.

I don’t know about you, but I find comfort in knowing that because I have accepted Christ as my Savior, my heavenly father won’t turn me over to the devil. But just a little side note here, if you reject the Lord long enough, He will turn you over to your evil desires. You can read all about that in Romans 1, beginning in verse 18.

Parents if you love your children, teach them to surrender to the Lord. Protect their innocence as long as you can. Do not expose them to the sin and degradation of this world until you have equipped them to handle it. Be sure to teach them all about the Lord and how He will guide them on the right path (Proverbs 3:5-6) and how He will protect them in times of trouble (Psalm 91).

Ruth Graham said it best when she said if God didn’t punish America severely, He would owe an apology to Sodom and Gomorrah. We are living in some perilous times. We are seeing our screens filled with filth. We have easy access to evil.

Don’t sacrifice your children to evil.

Have a great day!
