Light and Dark

In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.    John 1:4-5 NKJV

When my grandmother used to describe two people that were totally opposite or two concepts that were very different from each other, she would often say, “They are as different as light and dark.” While Matthew opened with Christ’ genealogy and preparation for the birth of Christ, Mark opened with John the Baptist preparing the way and baptizing Jesus. Luke began with the announcement of John the Baptist’ birth and then the announcement of Jesus’ birth.

John immediately opened with who Jesus was. He began by saying in the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. John describes how Jesus was here when the earth was created. He goes on to talk about how all things were made through Him and nothing was made without Him.

When he says in Him was life and He was the light of men, John is explaining what Jesus will say in John 14:6 when He says, “I am the way, the truth, and the life and no man comes to the Father except through Me.” Our only way to have eternal life with God the Father is through Jesus Christ. We must trust in Him as our Savior. We can trust Him to guide us like a light shining in the darkness.

This world today is full of darkness. Just a couple days ago, I attended my niece’s college graduation. Due to recent shootings at graduations, now only clear bags can be brought into the center. There is a heavier police presence. There is lots of talk about how bad things have gotten. Spencer Smith, a Baptist missionary, likes to say that things are looking really good because things are looking really bad. What he means by this is that the worse things get, the closer we must be to the rapture. Sadly, we don’t know how bad they will get before Jesus comes to bring us home.

As I mentioned earlier in the week, I had a niece who graduated from college. From where I was sitting, I could see that my niece had decorated her cap but couldn’t read it until we got outside. She had put some yellow roses on it and had written “Proverbs 3:5-6”. As you know this is one of my favorite verses because it tells us to love the Lord with all our heart and lean not on our own understanding. It tells us to acknowledge Him in all our ways, and He will guide us on the right paths. My prayer for all these young graduates is that they trust in  God to guide them along their paths of life.

Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” We need Jesus to light our way through this dark world. We must be careful to stay in His word and stay in His light. We must let His word light our way.

In this world, we have light and dark, good and evil. We must choose if we want to follow the light or remain in darkness. I will admit that I prefer total darkness when I am trying to sleep, but when I am awake, I want to be in the light.

I try to always remain in His light and allow His light to guide me, that keeps me from sliding into the darkness. He will do the same for you. Light always overcomes darkness. If you have spent time in darkness and are ready to come into the light, let Him guide you. Study His word and maintain close contact with Him through continual prayer.

Have a great day!
