Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says it to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.” John 4:10 NKJV
Our Scripture passage today comes from Jesus’ conversation with a Samaritan woman at a well. Jesus went to Samaria, something Jews didn’t normally like to do. He then struck up a conversation with a Samaritan woman, something Jewish men, especially Rabbis, weren’t supposed to do. And He asked her for a drink of water.
Because of all the aforementioned reasons, the woman questioned Him as to why He was asking her for a drink. Warren Wiersbe points out in his commentary that this is where Jesus made her aware that she was ignorant of three important factors. First, she didn’t know who Jesus was. She didn’t understand at this point in their conversation that He was the Messiah. Secondly, she didn’t know what He could do for her. She didn’t realize that this water He was speaking of was eternal life. And the third factor she didn’t understand was what she had to do to receive eternal life.
These are three of the most important facts we can know as well. Do you really know who Jesus is? Do you understand the great love He has for you? Do you understand that He is the way, the truth, and the life, and there is no other way you can get to God the Father except through Him (John 14:6)? Do you know that He is your rock and your redeemer and your refuge in times of trouble?
Do you really understand what He can do for you? He came from heaven to live a sinless life and set an example for you and me. He also took on our sin so that His blood could cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
And last but not least, do you know how to receive this awesome gift that Jesus offers? First, you must come to understand that you, and everyone else on this planet, are sinners in need of a savior. Admit this and confess your sin to Him. 1 John 1:9 says if we say we have no sin, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us. So, admit it, we are all sinners.
Then you must believe in Him and believe that His blood can wash your sins away. 1John 1:9 says if we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Believing in Him is part of the process, but we are told even the demons believe in Him. We must go one step further.
We must receive Him. We must accept Christ as our Savior and surrender our lives to Him. We must ask Him to fill our hearts with His Holy Spirit.
I spent my whole life in church. For many years, however, just like the woman at the well, I was ignorant of those three things. Are you? Do you have a good understanding of who Jesus is and what He can do for you? And do you know how to receive the awesome gift of eternal life that God offers to every one of us?
Pardon my bluntness, but if you are not ignorant of these three factors and still have not surrendered your life to Christ, then you are choosing to be ignorant. Jesus can not only offer us eternal life, but He can make this life here on earth a whole lot better. So, what are you waiting for? Turn to Him today. Confess and repent of your sin. Trust in Him and surrender your life to Him.
Have a great day!
