The Seriousness of Sin

And the Lord said to Moses, “Whoever has sinned against Me, I will blot him out of My book.”     Exodus 32:33 NKJV

Our Scripture passage comes from Exodus chapter 32 where the people were worshiping a golden calf. After all God had done for them from bringing them out of Egypt, parting the Red Sea, and providing manna for them to eat they worshipped a calf made of gold.

In verse 31 Moses told God, “These people have committed a great sin.” To make your own idol and worship it as a god is truly a big or great sin. The Bible teaches us however, that all sin is great. There is no little sin and big sin. Sin is sin. Lying is considered to be an abomination to the Lord in Proverbs 12:22. Yet how many times have you told a little white lie and thought it was no big deal? We are told in the Ten Commandments in Exodus 20:16 not to bear false witness against your neighbor. Have you ever gossiped or spread a rumor about someone only to find out it wasn’t true?

Sin is serious business. The worst part of sin is it creates a barrier between us and God. We are told in Isaiah 59:1-4 that it’s not that God’s hand is too short to save or is ear too heavy to hear but our sin separates us from God. Our sin hides His face from us so He will not hear our prayers. It goes on to say our hands are defiled with blood and our fingers with iniquity. Our lips have spoken lies and our tongue has muttered perversity.

In our Scripture passage, Moses had gone to God and asked Him to forgive the Israelites for their great sin. Moses even offered to let God blot his name out of the Book of Life. But God told Moses He would blot the names of those who had sinned against Him out of the book.

When our names are blotted out of the book it means we go to hell. If our name is not found in the book, we can’t make it into heaven. In Revelation 3:5 Jesus tells the messenger of the church of Sardis to tell those who overcome they will be clothed in white, and their names will not be blotted out of the book. In Revelation 20:12, John saw the Book of Life opened before the Great White Throne of Judgment. In verse 15, he wrote, “And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.”

We must overcome our sin. We must not let our sin overcome us. We must repent and be forgiven. When we repent, we are remorseful for our sin not just sorry we got caught. We need to pray to God to strengthen us against temptation. We must be willing to give up our sin. All sin is a great sin. All sin separates us from God.

The worst thing about hell is there is no hope. There is no longer a chance to turn to God. God is no longer there for you. You have been eternally separated from Him.

There was a time in my life when I thought my sin was no big deal. I now understand it was a matter of life and death. I choose life. I choose to live with God eternally in the home He has prepared for me. I choose to worship Him and praise Him and do my best to honor Him with how I live my life.

Sin is serious business. It is a cancer that destroys us. The cure is Jesus Christ. Turn to Him today. Let go of any intentional sin in your life. 1 John 1:9 says if we confess our sin to Him, He is faithful. He will forgive us and cleanse us of all unrighteousness.

Sin is deadly. Christ shed His blood so that we could be saved. Turn to Him and let His blood wash your sin away.

Have a great day!
