Living in the Secret Place

He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust.”     Psalm 91:1-2 NKJV

Right now, we have a choice in where we live. Our Scripture passage tells us we can choose to live in the secret place of the Most High. Other versions say the shelter of the Most High. I have to say it’s a great place to dwell. I’ve been living there for a while now and I highly recommend it.

What does it mean to live in the secret place of the Most High? Well, it means that like everyone else we will experience trials and tribulations, but the difference is we will experience them abiding under God’s shadow. It means He will uphold us with His righteous right hand (Isaiah 41:10). It means as we go through difficult times, He will give His angels charge over us to keep us in all our ways and they will support us with their hands so our foot will not strike a stone (Psalm 91:11-12).

Living in the secret place of the Most High means you have dedicated yourself to the Lord. It means you experience a close, personal relationship with Him. It means you love Him and trust in Him with all your heart. This means spending time with Him each day. It means we do our best to imitate Him and treat others as we would like for Him to treat us.

We often choose where we want to live by location. There is no better location than under the shadow of the Almighty God.

We often choose our locations for safety. Psalm 91 goes for 16 verses speaking of the safety God provides for those who choose to live under His shelter.

We choose where we want to live by the neighborhood. When we devote our lives to Christ we become a member of Christ’s family. We have a network of Christian friends. We have the support of our church family.

God’s secret place is no secret to those who study His Holy Word. It is only a secret to those who choose not to read God’s word. I lived in God’s secret place for a while and then I wandered away. It took me many years to get back to my fortress and my refuge, but I’m so glad I did.

Living there gives us peace and joy regardless of our circumstances (Philippians 4:7). When we choose to dwell in God’s shelter by loving Him and living according to His purpose, we know he works even the bad things out for our good (Romans 8:28). And most importantly, we know if we have God on our side, no one can prevail against us (Romans 8:31).

Living in God’s secret place doesn’t mean you will never experience trials and tribulations. Jesus told us we certainly will face times of trouble, but when we live in God’s shelter we need not fear because Jesus intercedes for us. Jesus died to save us, and Jesus has overcome the world (John 16:33).

Where are you living today? Are you devoted to Christ? Are you choosing to live in God’s secret place? Are you experiencing the peace and joy that come from living in His shelter?

We often turn to God in times of chaos and turmoil and run into His shelter, but when the storm passes, we step out and go on our merry little way. At least that’s how I did it for many years. But if you stay in God’s shelter, you will find that the storms aren’t so scary. You will find you can maintain peace and joy as you go through trying times.

Run to God’s shelter and make the choice to live in His secret place where you will be safe. Living there while you are here on earth guarantees you will spend eternity with Him in heaven.

Have a great day!
