Then Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, Moses did not give you the bread from heaven, but My Father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” John 6:32-33 NKJV
Jesus taught us to pray in Matthew 6:11, “give us this day our daily bread.” In our Scripture passage, Jesus was saying that He was the bread of God. Jesus provided manna in the wilderness for the Israelites. They were to gather it first thing in the morning. It had enough nutritional sustenance to sustain them for a day of marching in the wilderness.
Each morning, He gave them enough to get them through that day. No more and no less. They weren’t to store it up for future days except on the Sabbath. The manna God provided for the Israelites is a picture or an example of the spiritual nourishment we get from His Son, Jesus Christ.
We can’t store up spiritual nourishment. If you think you can go to church for an hour each week and have ten minutes of spiritual nourishment to last you the next six days, you got it all wrong. That’s not how it works. We need God every hour of every day. More importantly, we should start our day in communication with Him through prayer and Bible study.
God put the manna on the ground for them in the early morning hours. If they didn’t pick it up early, the sun would melt it. If we don’t get with God and receive spiritual nourishment when we start our day, our day may become busy, and we will be distracted. This will leave us unnourished for the day.
We have always been told that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. People like to say first coffee, but I tell you it needs to be first Jesus. We have no idea what our day will hold. Jesus does. He knows just what we need for the day ahead.
Give God the first part of your day before life gets in the way. Trust in Him to guide you, nourish you, strengthen you and protect you as you go through the day.
We are told in Lamentations 3:22-23 that God’s mercies are new every morning. Each day God’s love and faithfulness are renewed. Fill up for the day ahead. Ask God to forgive you where you have failed Him. Ask Him to guide you and give you wisdom and discernment. Ask Him to send His Holy Spirit to fill your heart.
I can tell you from personal experience, this is the best way to start your day.
Have a great day!
