Meditation

May my meditation be pleasing to Him; I will rejoice in the LORD.     Psalm 104:34 HCSB

When we think of meditation, we think of someone sitting cross-legged on the floor, eyes closed. Meditation is defined as to think deeply or focus one’s mind for a period of time, in silence or with the aid of chanting, for religious or spiritual purposes or as a method of relaxation. Meditation is designed to train one’s attention and awareness and to detach from rambling or repetitive thoughts in order to become calm and relaxed.

Biblical meditation differs in that it involves pondering the words of Scripture with a receptive heart. When we meditate on God’s Word, we trust the Holy Spirit to help us rightly divide the truth. We focus on God’s word, and we pray to Him. Praying is how we speak to God through our intercessor, Jesus Christ. Reading or studying our Bible is listening to what God has to say to us.

In Psalm 143:5 David said, “I remember the days of old; I meditate on all You have done; I reflect on the work of your hands.”

It is so easy to get wrapped up in thinking about all that is wrong. It’s easy to become distracted by all the works of the devil that is all around us. These should not be the things we waste our time thinking about over and over. It does us no good.

Philippians chapter 4 has the cure for anxiety. We are told in by Paul in vv. 4-5 that we should always rejoice in the Lord and let our graciousness, or our goodness be known to everyone. We are told in v. 6 that we should not worry about anything. I know that is sometimes easier said than done, but Paul also tells us how to do this. We are told in v. 7 that if we don’t worry, the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding will guard our hearts and our minds. But how do you stop from worrying? Well, Paul explained that in v. 8. You focus or meditate on all that is good. Focus on things that are honorable, just, pure, lovely, commendable, exuding moral excellence, and worthy of praise. Paul tells us if we do these things which he has learned to do, the God of peace will be with us.

The devil wants to distract us and get our focus off of God. The devil wants us to be so focused on what is wrong, we forget about all the good God has done in our lives.

What are you thinking about? Meditation goes beyond thinking to fixation. Do you fixate on the evil that is all around you or do you fixate on God’s goodness? I have learned over the years that fixating on God’s goodness helps me to enjoy life in this sin filled world. It helps me to know God’s got this, whatever this may turn out to be. It helps me to know God loves me and works all things for my good because I love Him and I’m doing my best to do the things He calls me to do.

Our pastor calls focusing on all the bad stuff, “stinking thinking.” If you have a lot of that going on, you can change it. We are called in 2 Corinthians 10:5 to take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ. We are told in doing so we can demolish strongholds. If the devil has a stronghold on you that has you thinking of all the negativity that goes on in this world, take your thoughts captive. Focus on Jesus and His goodness. Focus on what is honorable and lovely and just and pure. Focus on Him and His word.

Joshua 1:8 tells us to meditate on God’s word day and night and be careful to do all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous and have good success.

No good comes from us thinking about all the evil in this world. Turn your focus to your Lord and Savior. Meditate on His word and His goodness.

Have a great day!
