Bringing About God’s Wrath

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, both His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.     Romans 1:18-20

When we disobey God, we anger God. It’s just that simple. God is loving, kind, and patient, but our continued, deliberate disobedience will bring about His wrath. Our Scripture passage for today tells us we are without excuse should we bring about God’s wrath. God will not tolerate ungodliness and unrighteousness.

You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to see God’s hand in His creation. The way the universe is perfectly created, so that there is just enough oxygen, the placement of the sun, the moon and the stars, the miracle of the human body and how it works. The wonder of the beautiful places on earth that God has created show us that only God could have created all these things.

This Scripture passage begins, however, by telling us God’s wrath is revealed from heaven. The same God that made us and all the things in this universe is the same God who will become angry when we disobey His commands. He is the same God who will bring punishment upon those of us who fail to acknowledge His sovereignty. He will bring punishment on those of us who fail to fear Him.

Fearing God means we stand in awe of His strength and His power. It means we understand He is a good Father who loves us and in His great love for us, He will discipline us. In Proverbs 3:11-12, it says, “My son, do not reject the discipline of Yahweh or loathe His reproof, for whom Yahweh loves He reproves, even as a father reproves the son in whom he delights.”

God loves us enough to discipline us. He disciplines us to try to teach us to do what is right.

In Proverbs 3:7 it says, “Do not be wise in your own eyes, fear Yahweh and turn away from evil.”

There will come a day when we stand in judgment before the Lord. Hebrews 9:27 tells us it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment. Romans 14:12 says, “So then each of us will give an account of himself to God.” Matthew 10:28 tells us not to fear those who kill the body and cannot kill the soul but fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

Romans 3:23 tells us all sin and fall short of the glory of God. The only way we can avoid bringing about God’s wrath is to walk with Him. We are told in Galatians 5:16 if we walk in the spirit, we will not fulfill the desires of the flesh. Romans 6:23 tells us the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

John 3:36 says everyone who believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on Him.

We can either be obedient and please God living our lives in a way that brings Him glory, honor and praise or we can be disobedient and bring about God’s wrath. It is a choice we all must make.

I encourage you to choose wisely. I’ve lived life both ways and I can tell you that while a life lived in Christ is not trouble free, it is a life of peace and joy regardless of the troubles you may face. It is this way because we are never alone to deal with these problems. We have God on our side and by our side.

Turn to Him today. Trust in Him and commit to be obedient to Him. There will still be times when we mess up because we are human, but we don’t want to continually, deliberately sin and bring about His wrath. No good comes from that.

Have a great day!
