Mankind, He has told you what is good and what it is the Lord requires of you: to act justly, to love faithfulness, and to walk humbly with your God. Micah 6:8 HCSB
So what does God really want from us. This question is asked and answered in Micah 6. We are to seek justice or act justly, love faithfulness (some versions say love mercy) and walk humbly with our God. Sounds easy enough right?
Now as Christians we know that there are steps to being saved. These steps include accepting Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, believing in Him, and confessing our sins to him. We must then repent and ask forgiveness for our sins.
Often times when we do this it’s like a honeymoon period. We are filled with the Holy Spirit, we strive to do good and then the devil creeps back in. Often times he manages to creep in without our hardly even noticing. He’s crafty and cunning that way. He convinces us that we have that salvation thing down pat and we don’t need to work at it anymore. This is when we begin to backslide. We fail to go to church, we fail to read our Bible daily, we fail to spend as much time in prayer as we should. This opens the door for the devil and well sadly if you are like me then you have lived the rest of the story.
So what does God require of us in our day to day living. Several years ago the movie “Courageous” came out. It was a really good movie and if you haven’t seen it then I highly recommend it. The theme song for that movie was “Courageous” by Casting Crowns. Also a great song. There is a part of the song where they repeat the phrase, “seek justice, love mercy, walk humbly with our God”. It’s a really good song and this particular part has a really catchy tune that sometimes, like yesterday, gets stuck in my head. Of course, these lyrics come from Micah 6:8. The book of Micah discusses the sin, destruction, and restoration of Israel and Judah.
In this particular passage, they are asking what they can do to please God. The answer is simple, seek justice or act justly, seek mercy or faithfulness, and walk humbly with our God.
Now yesterday, we spoke of how God doesn’t like it when we treat others unkindly. So today we are looking at what God does like. We are looking at what God requires of us.
God wants us to act justly. We are to treat others with fairness. Seeking justice is something that we should all do. We should do what is right, plain and simple. Yesterday we talked about how it is often our human nature to do the wrong thing, however, God does give us a conscience. We know right from wrong and we know when we are doing wrong. God expects us to do right.
We are to love faithfulness and mercy. If we love God and we are true to Him then we will want to be like Him. We will show kindness and mercy to others. When I am having a hard time being merciful to others, I just stop and think about how much mercy and grace God has shown me. That changes my attitude quickly. Where would you be without God’s mercy and grace? The Bible tells us that we are to let the one who is without sin cast the first stone. Are you without sin? Well, then I guess you should just put those stones down.
We are to walk humbly with our God. Proverbs 16:18 tells us that pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall. Yesterday we talked about how those who go against God and his children will suffer. The Bible is very clear on the issue of pride. God hates pride. He will not tolerate it. We are to walk humbly with our God. Jesus Christ was fully man and fully God and yet he lived a life of humility.
So as you go through this day remember to seek justice, love mercy and walk humbly with our God. If you can remember these three things then you will be spending your day pleasing God.
Have a great day!
