Our Lord and our God, You are worthy to receive glory and honor and power, because You have created all things, and because of Your will they exist and were created. Revelation 4:11 HCSB
The word honor can be used as a noun meaning high respect or great esteem, adhering to what is right or to a conventional standard of conduct and/or something regarded as a privilege. As a verb honor can mean to regard someone with great respect or to fulfill an obligation or keep an agreement.
If we truly love the Lord, we will encompass all of these into our relationship with Him. We will regard Him with high respect or great esteem and will adhere to His commands and accept them as what is right. We will regard our relationship with Him as a privilege. We will regard Him with great respect and will fulfill an obligation to love Him with all our heart, all our soul and all our might (Deuteronomy 6:5).
If we truly honor God and love God, we will keep His commands (John 14:15). This means we will honor those His word tells us to honor. Romans 12:10 tells us to love one another with brotherly affection and outdo one another in showing honor. 1 Timothy 5:17 tells us to show double honor to the elders who preach and teach in our churches.
Ephesians 6:2-3 tells us to honor our father and our mother, which is repeated from the Ten Commandments in Exodus 20:12. Hebrews 13:4 tells us to, “Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous.”
Honoring God is not something we can fake; it comes from the heart. It will be painfully obvious in our words and actions. Isaiah 29 speaks of men who honor God with their lips but not their hearts. God says He will confound such people and cause their wisdom to vanish and their perception to be hidden. In verse 15, he says, “Woe to those who go to great lengths to hide their plans from the LORD. They do their works in darkness, and say ‘Who sees us? Who knows us?'”
In verse 20, He says the ruthless one will disappear, and all those who lie in wait with evil intent will be killed-those who, with their speech accuse a person of wrongdoing, who set a trap at the gate for the mediator, and without cause deprive the righteous of justice.
In our relationship with God, it’s all about honoring Him. When we honor Him, we honor the others in our lives. In order to honor someone, we must let go of ourselves. We must remove any pride and submit with humility to Him and His way of life.
Take a minute to think about this. Do you honor Him in all you do? Do you honor Him in all you say and type? Jesus said in John 12:26, “If anyone serves Me, he must follow Me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.
If you don’t honor God, you won’t understand. As Isaiah 29:24 explains God gives wisdom to those who honor Him. Those who honor Him are given perception, they get it. It’s a reciprocal relationship as Jesus explained in John 12:26.
We are told in 1 Peter 5:6 to humble ourselves under the mighty hand of God, so that He may exalt us at the proper time. Humble yourself before Him. Give Him glory and honor and praise. He is worthy of honor and praise.
Simply put when we honor God, we submit to Him, we trust in Him, and we obey Him. Are you honoring God today? It’s all about honor in our relationship with Him.
If you don’t understand this, submit to God and pray for wisdom and discernment. He will gladly help you understand.
Have a great day!
