What He Sees In Me

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.     Ephesians 2:10 ESV

There are days when I am a hot mess. Oh, I try my best to be all that God wants me to be but there are times when I fail miserably. I often wonder what such an awesome, powerful, mighty God could see in a sinner like myself. I know there must be times when the words that come out of my mouth and my behavior breaks His heart. I know there must be times when He is disappointed. But He loves me anyway. I just can’t figure that out. He loves me when I am doing what He called me to do but He also loves me when I am behaving like a faithless spoiled brat. I can’t imagine that.

We are told in Jeremiah 1:5 that God knew us before He formed us in the womb. We are no surprise to God. We don’t surprise Him when we fail, and we don’t surprise Him when we do as we are called to do. He knows what to expect from us and He loves us anyway. It’s sometimes hard to wrap my head around that. We are told in John 3:16 that he loved us so much He sent His one and only Son to die for us so that we may have eternal life. That’s a whole lot of love. As a matter of fact, John 15:13 says that there is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. I can even try to understand dying for a dear friend.

But when we sin, we are His enemy (James 4:4). When we do the things the Bible tells us not to do we are His enemy. He still died for us while we were sinners (Romans 5:8). He didn’t wait for us to get our acts together, He died for us while we were still all messed up. We can come to Him as the hot mess we are and He is willing to clean us up and get us straightened out if we are willing to surrender to Him.

It took me a long time to figure out just how much He loved me. It took prayer and Bible study and a number of Sunday School classes and good sermons. But I finally came to understand this great love He has for me. It’s still hard to comprehend at times. I guess this is mainly because I don’t understand the “why” behind it. I get that He loves me but for the life of me I just don’t understand why. Even on my best day I am a sinner. I don’t want to be a sinner, but I still fall short. But He loves me anyway.

Hebrews 11:6 tells us it is impossible to please Him without faith. There are days when my faith gets weak and I have to pray to Him to strengthen me. But even on those days, He loves me still.

I don’t know what He sees in me. I may never understand that. But I do know what an awesome difference He has made in my life. I do know that since I surrendered my heart to Him, He has been with me through thick and thin. He convicts me when I do wrong and gives me the chance to repent. He is good to me, so much better than I deserve.

I don’t know what He sees in me, but I know I intend to spend the rest of my life here on earth being the best I can be for Him. I know there will be days when I fail miserably. But I know when I am feeling weak, He is right there to uphold me with His righteous hand (Isaiah 41:10). For this reason, my soul clings to Him (Psalm 63:8).

If you are wondering what God sees in you, stop wondering. Surrender your all to Him. He sees in you someone that He has fearfully and wonderfully made. He sees someone that He can mold and make into the person He wants them to be if you will only let Him.

Trying to please the world got me nowhere and I’m sure it broke my Savior’s heart. I’ve got a lifetime of making up to do, but praise God He’s right here to help me. He wants to help you. Dive into His word. Study His word and learn of the great love for you. Once you understand just how great His love is, you will want to return that love.

Have a great day!
