Moses said to the Lord, “Pardon your servant, Lord. I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant, I am slow of speech and tongue.”
The Lord said to him, “Who gave human beings their mouths? Who makes them deaf or mute? Who gives them sight or makes them blind? Is it not I, the Lord? Now go, I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.” Exodus 4:10-12 NIV
Now this scripture passage comes after the Lord had appeared to Moses in a burning bush and began speaking with him about going to free the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. God is instructing Moses to go and talk to Pharaoh and demand that he let the Israelites go. Moses clearly does not want to do this and makes several excuses as to why he is not the man for the job He asked God to please send someone else. God performs a few miracles for him and tells him that he will perform miracles in front of Pharaoh to prove to Pharaoh that God sent him. So Moses now makes a plea to God by saying that he doesn’t speak well. Perhaps he stuttered or had some other type of speech impediment. God responds by telling him that the God that gives human beings their mouths and the ability to speak will help him to speak and tell him what to say.
Moses and the Israelites had been crying out to God to save them from the oppression they were under as slaves in Egypt. God had heard their cry and had chosen Moses who had been born a Hebrew but by some cunning plan of his birth mother had been adopted by the Pharaoh’s daughter. He had been troubled by the mistreatment of the Hebrew slaves by the Egyptians and had even killed an Egyptian. He had basically fled the country and married and was living the good life when God called him to go back and bring his people out of Egypt. Now he is trying his best to talk God out of this plan and just get him to send someone else.
Have you ever had one of those times, when God was clearly calling you to do something. One of those times when you are perplexed as to why God is calling you to do this one particular thing. Maybe it is something way out of your comfort zone. When God called me to teach Sunday school, I was nervous about it but excited. I thought “okay I can do this with God’s help.” When God called me to do Christian Counseling, I was a little nervous but had the degree, had the training and I knew I could do it. But when God called me to do this blog? Well that was a whole other story my friend. I was so computer illiterate. I thought surely God must be talking to someone else. Now God didn’t come to me in a burning bush, but let’s just say he made the fact that he wanted me to do a blog painfully obvious. Even though I was resistant, he provided me with someone to help me get my website and blog up and going. A good friend that was very patient when I had no idea what he was talking about when developing my website. Almost every question he asked of me was answered with something like “um, what is that?” But God provided the way.
Years ago I was in a job that I hated. I had applied to numerous other jobs for which I was well qualified but never got hired. After four years of trying desperately to get out of that job, I realized that God wanted me right where I was. I accepted that fact and began to do my best to work for Him. I witnessed to others whenever I had the chance, I knew that God was calling me to do something right where I was. After a couple of years of me doing God’s will he provided a clear and easy path out of that job into a job that I loved. My new job was stressful but so much more enjoyable than the old one. God blessed me with the new job and provided a way for me to retire after four years in the new job. God knew what my future would hold and he knew that the time for me to leave that job was then. I did love the job even though it was really stressful and would have gladly stayed several more years but God was calling me to go.
See we live in the here and now. We are miserable here and now so we need to go. God sees what’s going to happen in our lives 20 years from now and he has a plan to work it out for our good. But he promises to work it out for the good of those who love Him and are called according to his purpose. You have a job to do. God calls each and everyone of us to work for Him. We are not all called to do the same job, but we are all called to do something.
There is a website called giftstest.com. You can answer a few simple questions and they email you an answer listing the gifts God has given you to use in serving Him. It’s free of charge. This may help you see what direction He is leading you.
If you are struggling with where you are in life right now, I strongly encourage you to find out what it is that God is calling you to do. You will not be completely happy until you answer your calling. If you are wondering how you go about finding out what it is that God would have you to do, then spend time with Him in daily Bible reading and prayer. The best way to know what God wants us to do is to establish a close relationship with Him.
When I kept getting rejected time and time again and was so miserable in my current job, it was very upsetting. I asked God, “why me?” I had spent years gaining the training and experience necessary for the job for which I was applying. I just hadn’t spent enough time in prayer to know that this was not God’s plan for me. Had I gotten that job, I would have had to work many more years before I retired. I would have had to move away from my family that was going to need me in the next few years due to medical problems. God knew what was coming my way and he worked it all out for my good. He knows what is coming your way also. Trust him. He has a plan for you. It is way better than what you could plan for yourself, but he also has a job for you to do now.
If you are in a bad situation, there is a reason for it. Maybe God needs you there to do something for Him. In my case, it was simply to try to set a good example for some younger people and to use any opportunity they gave me to encourage them to turn to Christ. Once I was faithful in doing the task He had assigned me, I began to enjoy my job much more. When my job started to really get bad, he whisked me out of there into a much better job.
When He called me to do this blog. I asked, “why me?” I still don’t know the answer to that question but I know that even when I tried to not do it, he equipped me to go forward and get it done.
So today, instead of asking God “why me?”, try saying “here I am God, your true and faithful servant, what is it that you would have me to do?”. I promise you, that your life will get much better once you do.
Have a great day!
