For the Lord God is our sun and our shield. He gives us grace and glory. The Lord will withhold no good thing from those who do what is right. O Lord of Heaven’s Armies, what joy for those who trust in you. Psalm 84:11-12
Who among you fears the Lord and obeys the word of his servant? let the one who walks in the dark, who has no light, trust in the name of the Lord and rely on their God. Isaiah 50:10
Trust and obey is a hymn written in 1887 by John H. Stammis. This hymn gives a wonderfully simplistic view of how to live a peaceful and joyful life. It instructs us to simply “trust and obey for there’s no other way to be happy in Jesus but to trust and obey'”. It is based on the above scripture passage.
If you are praying for something that seems impossible, chances are, without faith, you will never see it come to pass. So you have to have faith in what is unseen in order to see what you don’t believe possible come to pass. Sounds kind of confusing doesn’t it. But really it is not confusing at all. The devil would like to make you believe it is confusing because he is the author of confusion, but here Jesus simplifies it for His disciples. With faith nothing is impossible. I think we sometimes tend to forget we serve a mighty God. We serve the God that not only put the universe together but holds it together. Remember that the wind and the waves obey Him. He can heal the sick, He gives strength to the powerless. He caused the sun to stand still. He raised the dead. He walked on water. I could go on, but I’m sure you see where I’m going. Absolutely nothing is impossible for God because He is God. So when you pray to Him do you truly believe that he can do the impossible?
I have been through times that seemed so dark and I have gotten down on my knees and prayed for God to change things and even though it may not have happened over night, I have seen miraculous changes. I have learned to have faith. I know that God can part the sea. I know that He is my anchor in the storm. I know that God withholds no good thing from me and that He only wants what is best for me.
Trusting God comes through trial and tribulation. These things build our endurance and they build our faith. We learn to trust in God as we develop a closer relationship with Him.
Once we learn to trust in God, then we want to obey Him. We know what wonderful things He has done, so we want to be obedient. My earthly father was really good to me. I knew he loved me and he provided for me, I trusted him and I wanted to obey him. Of course, there were times where I messed up, but he forgave me and I learned from my mistakes. That is just how it is with our heavenly father. When we realize how much he truly loves us, we learn to trust that he is working things out for our good. We learn that he truly wants what is best for us. We learn to trust in Him.
As our love for Him grows, we want to be more obedient. We want to be in God’s will. This is where Satan steps in. Satan will often appear as an angel of light. Satan may appear to us as someone trying to help us in our darkest hour, but be careful. If this so-called angel tries to get us out of God’s will, then we must not fall into the trap. If this so-called angel does not exhibit Christian behavior and show the fruit of the spirit, then we must beware. Don’t fall prey to the schemes of the devil.
If we trust God and we love God, then we will do our best to obey Him. No, we will not be perfect, but we will strive to be perfect. We will strive to be as righteous as humanly possible. We will strive to be in God’s will. When we trust someone and we love someone, we want to make them happy. Our obedience to God makes Him happy. Being kind and compassionate to others makes Him happy. Loving your enemies and praying for those that persecute you makes Him happy. When you strive to love others the way that He loves you, that makes Him happy.
We must have a reverential fear of the Lord. We must learn to move from the darkness into the light.
Trust in God. If you try having a little faith, you will learn that you can have a lot of faith. You will learn to put your trust in Jesus and you will learn to have total dependence on Him. It’s so refreshing to know we are not alone and God is there for us, no matter what we may go through. So as you go through this day, just do what the song says and trust and obey.
Have a great day!
