What Are You Looking For?

But from there you will seek the LORD your God, and you will find Him, when you seek Him with all your heart and all your soul.  Deuteronomy 4:29 HCSB

Have you ever misplaced something that you really needed, like your car keys? And of course, the time that you can’t find them is when you have somewhere important to be and are running late, right? At that moment when you are searching for those keys, you are giving it all you’ve got. You are searching so hard that anyone who sees you may ask, “What are you looking for?” It’s obvious to all those around you that you are intensely searching for something.

Just the other day, I passed two men on the interstate. They had pulled their truck over and were walking around in the grass with their eyes to the ground. You could tell that they were searching for something. They were diligent with their search.

As we go through life, there are things that we need on a daily basis. Our car keys are just one example. But the problem is that while we are seeking the things we need to get us through the day, we sometimes get so busy seeking those things that we forget to seek the One who is most important. We forget to seek God with all our heart and all our soul. We are told in Matthew 6:33 that if we seek first the righteousness of the kingdom of God that all the other things will be added to us. If we first set about to focus on God and seek Him with our heart and soul, He will provide all that we need and I have found that He will take care of some of my wants as well.

We know what it looks like when someone is searching for something they have lost. They may be tearing their house or their car apart. They may be crawling around on the ground. You can tell when someone is looking for something.

Well, it’s the same when we seek God. If we are truly seeking God with all our heart and all our soul, it is obvious to those around us. Proverbs 8:17 tells us that the Lord loves those who love Him and those who seek Him diligently find Him. Hebrews 11:6 tells us that without faith it is impossible to please God, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who seek Him.

Seeking God is something that we do on a continual basis. We are told in 1 Chronicles 16:11 to seek the LORD and His strength; seek His presence continually. We can become distracted if we do not continually focus on Him.

My grandma used to tell me that if you go looking for something you will usually find it. I have found that if I go looking for trouble it is easy to find, but praise God when I seek Him with my heart and my soul, He also is easy to find. He is there for me.

Take just a minute here and think about what it is you are truly looking for. What do you put the majority of your time and money into? What do you seek with a passion? If it’s not God, it will only bring heartache. You see we are to first seek Him and trust Him to provide everything else. When we put God first, He will make sure that everything else falls into place.

Have a great day!
