The Confusion of Darkness

Life was in Him, and that life was the light of men. That light shines in the darkness, yet the darkness did not overcome it. John 1:4-5 HCSB

If we say, “We have fellowship with Him,” yet we walk in darkness, we are lying and are not practicing the truth. But if we walk in the light as He Himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.  1 John 1:6-7 HCSB

I wrote a few weeks ago about getting turned around in the darkness of the woods behind my house. It is easy to get confused when we are in darkness. We simply were not made to live in darkness. Have you ever awakened in the middle of the night and tried to get up without waking anyone else and tried to tip toe in the dark? Even though you know where everything is, it’s easy to get disoriented and confused in total darkness.

A couple weeks ago, my husband got up and walked across the room to turn his alarm clock off. Our room is totally dark. Between his grogginess and the total darkness, he misjudged the distance between him and the fan that he keeps by the bed. He fell over the fan, hitting his head on our bed. Now of course, he got up and went to work even though he probably should have gone and gotten a stitch or two. We can all relate to getting turned around even in the most familiar of settings when we are in darkness.

But there is something about even the smallest amount of light, it overcomes the darkness. A small nightlight can provide enough light to maneuver around a room or to guide one to a certain area in a building. The light from a small candle can overcome a small room enough to be able to see what’s in there.

Darkness can be scary. Scary scenes in movies always occur in darkness, right? There are times such as power outages when we have no choice but to suffer through the darkness. But we never have to live in spiritual darkness. We have a choice to always walk in the spiritual light that God provides. The other thing about light and dark is that they can’t coexist. Light always overcomes darkness. This makes it impossible to walk in light and darkness at the same time, just like we can’t possibly travel east and west at the same time. We must choose.

The Holy Spirit’s role is to help us to walk in the light that God provides. Our scripture passage today tells us that if we say we have fellowship with Him but continue to walk in darkness that we are lying.

The darkness of the devil and sin is not where we are meant to be. It is not a place of victory and it will never overcome the light. But the light always overcomes the darkness. If you have been walking aimlessly around in circles in the darkness and have become disoriented, know that this is not the life that God intends for you. Know that He wants everyone to walk in the light and be in fellowship with Him. I strongly encourage you today to step into the light. Trust in Him. Walk with Him and ask Him to fill you with His Holy Spirit so that you will never again suffer the fear and confusion that darkness brings.

Allow God’s light to shine in you so that you may be a light for others to guide them out of the darkness. Matthew 5:14 tells us that we are the light of the world and that we should not hide our light under a basket, but put it on a stand that it might give light to all in the house.

Walk in God’s light and allow His light to shine through you so that you may be a lamp to others. Spend time each day in God’s word so that it may a lamp unto your feet and a light unto your path.

We live in a world where the darkness is trying to overcome the light. As Christians, we must stand firm. We must be the light in the darkness. In the light we will walk strong and be victorious. In the dark we can become confused, disoriented and stumble and fall. Choose to walk in the light.

Have a great day!
