So don’t worry, saying ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear?’ For the idolaters eagerly seek all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you. Matthew 6:32-33 HCSB
I will admit that I have come kicking and screaming into this age of social media. I was very reluctant to use social media to get my blog out there, but I did. My husband set up everything for me and I have a dear friend who is trying to teach me but I will admit that I am at a time in my life where I have very little space in my brain for all this information.
I hear people talk about following and unfollowing people, blocking people, liking their posts, and I must admit that I can scarcely do any of that.
I’m not putting down on social media, but I am concerned about how I see it largely being used. There are people who have social media accounts that literally get their feelings hurt if someone doesn’t like their posts. They naturally assume that people are mad at them if they don’t click that button to like a post. Are you kidding me? But the Bible clearly tells us in Galatians 1:10 that we should only concern ourselves with pleasing God, not men. But let me ask you this, if God were reading your posts, would He “like” them. I see some that I am sure breaks His heart. Then I see people that use social media for a platform to rant and rave about every little thing that upsets them. Some use social media as a platform for doing a whole lot of stuff that they have no business doing. I will admit that I was once angry and used social media to get the word out to others about how someone had wronged a family member. I realized shortly afterward that I was wrong to do that. I had just sunk to that person’s level.
Ephesians 4:29 tells us to let no unwholesome talk come from our mouths but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs as it should benefit those who listen. Do your social media posts adhere to this?
Are you more excited about getting the laughing emoji over a dirty joke than you are about sharing God’s word? Now some of you are reading this thinking that I am a big prude and if that’s what a Jesus follower is called these days, I will proudly accept that title. I am just telling you that I have lived a life trying to please my fellow man and I now live trying my best to please Jesus. I have been a whole lot happier pleasing Jesus. I want you to have that peace and joy in your life as well.
Sadly, many of us spend more time in any given day studying a restaurant menu than we do studying God’s word. And I challenge you to really consider how much time you spend on social media or video games or television or whatever it is that takes up your time. Compare that to how much time you spend in Bible reading and prayer. How does it measure up?
All I’m asking you today is this, where is your focus? Are you spending so much time scrolling through posts and texts and all kinds of other distractions that you are too busy to study God’s word? Are you so busy messaging all your “friends” that you don’t have time to talk to the one that holds your future in His hands? Are you “following” the wrong people down a wrong path?
How many posts do you read and take time to like each day that have nothing to do with God’s word? How much time do you spend time in Bible study or prayer? And last but not least, consider your social media posts. Do you think that God would “like” them? If not, you better reconsider. He knows what’s in our hearts and minds. He certainly is aware of what we post. We are clearly told in the Bible that we will give account for everything we do (Romans 14:12).
A friend once told me that when they post on social media, they imagine God standing over their shoulder before they start typing. That’s a good thing to do because He is.
Have a great day!
