Getting There

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”     John 14:6 NASB

One of the first things we have to decide when we travel is how we are going to get there. As a general rule if I am traveling more than 8 hours from home, I prefer to fly unless I am interested in seeing the scenery on my route. But how we get there is very important. In the movie Planes, Trains, and Automobiles John Candy and Steve Martin  play two men trying to get home for the holidays. This odd couple meet at the airport and both are trying to get to Chicago. In a hilarious sequence of events they attempt to use every possible mode of transportation to get home.

Heaven is our home. It’s where we are meant to be. If you have decided that it is where you want to spend eternity, how to get there is not confusing at all. You can’t take a plane, a train, a ship, or an automobile. You can only get there through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. In our scripture passage today, Jesus is saying that He is the way, He is the truth, and He is the life.

He is the only way to get to spend eternity with God the Father in our heavenly home. He is all we need. Through Him our lives can be transformed and made new (2 Corinthians 5:17).  We can get a do over. Perhaps you want to spend eternity in your heavenly home, but you have made mistakes, big mistakes. Well, that’s okay, we all have (Romans 3:23). But we can go to Him, we can confess our sin, we can let Him know that we are truly sorry, and He will cleanse us. He will sanctify us, he will set us apart for our heavenly journey. He will justify us, He will make it as though we have never sinned. Through Him our sins can be forgiven and forgotten.

He is the truth. Lying is a serious problem for many people.  There are lots of people who lie just to lie. The Bible tells us that in the end days many will try to deceive us. But God’s word is true. This is why studying the Bible is so important. It’s how God talks to us. Our prayer life is important, it’s how we talk to Him. We all know how important communication is to any relationship, right? You can’t be in a close relationship with Him without being in constant communication. The awesome thing about this relationship is that the truth is the basis for it. He will never lie to us, He knows all we do, so we have no need to lie to Him.

He is the way. You can’t book a plane to heaven. You can’t hop on a bus. A train won’t get you there and you can’t drive there. You can only get there through a loving relationship with your Lord and Savior.

We all like to get away from time to time. We like to recharge our batteries through a change of scenery. But, as a friend used to say, all roads lead home. As we are in the midst of holiday season, you may hear or recall the song, There’s No Place Like Home for the Holidays. Well, my friend there’s no place like home, period. We are meant to reside in glory with God the Father for eternity. But scripture is very clear, if our names are not written in the Lamb’s book of life we will be thrown into the Lake of Fire forever and ever (Revelation 20:15).

Think about it this way, is there anyone in your phone’s contact list with which you have no relationship whatsoever? I once heard that a couple were trying to determine who to invite to their wedding and they decided to invite those in their phone’s contact list. That list is names and numbers of people with which we have a relationship of some sort, right? So, my question today is if we were to scroll through God’s contact list or the book of life, would your name be in there. Do you have a close, personal relationship with Jesus Christ. You see, He is the only way to get into that book. If you are not in that book Revelation 20:15 clearly tells us that we will not make the cut, we will be thrown into the lake of fire.

We are all planning a trip for eternity, there are only two destinations available. So, I ask you today, have you chosen your destination. If so, then know that there is only one way to get there. You must submit to Jesus Christ, you must put Him first in your life. You must trust in Him. Now if you have chosen hell as your destination, all you have to do is reject Him.  All you have to do is turn your back on Him and you will be well on your way.

I hope that you have chosen to spend eternity in glory with God the Father. Our former pastor used to say that heaven is our home and if we go to hell, we go as trespassers. The devil likes to entice us to trespass onto his property so that he can take control of us. Don’t do it. Trust in Jesus and allow Him to lead you home.

Have a great day!
