Cut Off

Don’t you know that your bodies are a part of Christ’s body? So should I take a part of Christ’s body and make it part of a prostitute? Absolutely not!

Don’t you know that anyone joined to a prostitute is one body with her? For scripture says, the two will become one flesh. But anyone joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him.  1 Corinthians 6:15-16 HCSB

In this scripture passage, Paul doesn’t hold back. He is telling the church members in Corinth to not forget that we are part of Christ’s body. We should also not forget that we are part of Christ’s body. In Romans 12:19 Paul says to present our bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God; this is your spiritual worship.

Because we are a part of Christ’s body we don’t function so well apart from Christ. If you cut your hand off, it’s not going to function as a hand without being connected to your body, right? When we are cut off from Christ we don’t function so well either. Oh, we may think we are doing fine, but in due time we will realize that this is simply not true. We are all given different gifts or different functions that God intends for us to use to support His church. He brings churches together with members in order to perform the tasks needed to run the business of His church. This is why some are gifted at working with young children, others with youth or adults, some are gifted in music and some are called to preach.

The problem comes in when we are disconnected from the body. The body needs us for the functions we perform and we need the body for support just like we need the use of our hands and feet and our hands and feet need our bodies to make them work.

Now if you have ever been ill or suffered some type of injury, you know that the tiniest body part malfunctioning can cause huge problems. The other problem we have with the body is when we put things in that shouldn’t be in there. It’s kind of like putting sugar in a car’s gas tank. Sugar isn’t so great for our body either. Years ago, I was diagnosed with a microadenoma on my pituitary gland. It was a small benign tumor that my neurologist said was about the size of a BB pellet. I have been getting MRI’s every year to check to be sure that it has not started to grow. Now, I am claustrophobic and really have to be prayed up to get through even an open MRI. I am happy to report that when I had my last MRI, I received a call from my neurologist a few days later saying that the microadenoma was gone, praise God! But that little thing was something that wasn’t supposed to be there. It was like a tiny little intruder on my pituitary gland. Now, we know that God is in control of those types of things, so He had a reason for it. But, the problem comes in when we put things in our lives that should not be there. When we put sexual immorality, addiction, bitterness, anger, hatred in our lives, they don’t function well. They are tumors that should be removed (Ephesians 4:31).

Hebrews 10:25 tells us that we should not neglect to attend church. The church is the body of Christ. It is not the building, it is the people. It is you and me. When we are cut off from the church, we are like a body part that no longer works or functions in the role it was meant for. If you have ever broken a limb, you know how painful and inconvenient that can be.

You are a part of Christ’s body. You are to treat your body like a temple. Our bodies were meant to be a part of the body of Christ. When we fill them with information, thoughts, behaviors and substances that were not intended for them, it causes problems. Maybe you are experiencing some of those problems today. Maybe you are cut off and you think you are doing just fine, well hold that thought. A storm is headed your way and you are going to want the shelter of God.

If you are feeling cut off, if you are feeling as though you are not functioning in the way that you should, turn to God today. It doesn’t require major surgery to reattach yourself to the body of Christ. We only have to call on Him and trust in Him. Find a good Bible teaching church and reconnect yourself today.

Have a great day!
