When we mean to

For if we deliberately sin after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a terrifying expectation of judgment and the fury of a fire about to consume the adversaries.  Hebrews 10:26-27 HCSB

We know that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23).  We know that there are sins of commission, those that we do. There are  sins of omission, these are the sins that we commit by not doing what we are supposed to do.  Our scripture passage today is talking about intentional sin.

We know that sometimes we do things that we don’t really mean to do and sometimes we do things intentionally.  Last week I had an opportunity to see how gracious my little six year old niece is when we were at her cousin’s birthday party.  A little boy, who was probably 2 or 3, ran into her.  His mother told him to tell her he was sorry.  She responded with, “that’s okay, he didn’t mean to do it, my little brother does that all the time”.   She wasn’t angry because this child was running and accidentally ran into her.  He didn’t mean to run into her.

When we watch crime shows, we hear things like premeditated.  In the case of murder, there are several degrees when punishment is considered.  If the murder was self defense, often times the person goes unpunished.  If someone dies as the result of an accident there may only be a slight punishment based on the negligence of the person who caused the accident. There can also be a murder as the result of someone acting in the heat of passion.  If someone plots to kill someone and plans out this murder with numerous opportunities to rethink it and not go through with it, the penalty is usually much more harsh.

There will be times that we sin but really didn’t mean to do it.  Now walking in close relationship with our Lord and Savior helps to prevent this, but that’s a whole other blog.  Sometimes sin happens and we are truly sorry and we repent and ask God to help us not do that again.  But that is not what I’m talking about here.  I am talking about that sin that you have in your life that you know is wrong, but you refuse to let go of it.  You know, that sin that you think you can’t live without.  For me, it was sin that I thought that God would just overlook and give me a free pass on.  I learned that there is no such thing.

God is no respecter of persons.  His instructions are made very clear in the Bible.  He tells us what is right and what is wrong.  We are expected to follow the rules.  If we fail to do so, we can suffer the consequences.   It doesn’t matter if you are a faithful church member or even a deacon or a pastor, you still don’t get that “get out of hell free” card.  You don’t get to pick and choose which sins you want to commit and which ones you are willing to refrain from.

This period in my life just made me miserable.  The deeper I wallowed in my sin, the more miserable my life became.  If you have sin that you just refuse to let go of, I am sure you know what I mean.

There is no better time than now to make things right with God.  Cry out to God, ask Him to help you remove this sin from your life.  He will and you will be so glad to be rid of it.  Trust me, I’ve been there, done that , and got the t-shirt.

If we fail to do this, our scripture passage tells us that we have a terrifying expectation of judgment.  No one wants that.

God’s love is worth so much more than any sin that you think you can’t live without.  Psalm 34:8 tell us to Taste and see that the Lord is good.  Don’t take my word for it, try it for yourself.  Draw near to God and ask Him to forgive you of your sin and help you to get it out of your life. You will be so glad you did.

Have a great day!
